5 Ways to Monetize a Book, Before Writing It by Trevor Crane

For the better part of a decade, I’ve been helping business owners and entrepreneurs monetize their message. If you want to help more people, change the world and STAND OUT from your competition, you’re going to love this article.

THE TRUTH: Becoming an author, writing the “right” book, and properly marketing it, is the best way to grow your brand, your movement and your business.

But, just having a book, and waiting around for the checks to roll in, isn’t going to cut it.

THE LIE: There is a huge misconception that, “If you build it (write it), they will come.”

The problem is, you’re not Kevin Costner and you don’t live in the Field of Dreams.

Here are 5 ways to monetize your book an grow your brand BEFORE your book is done.

Trevor Crane, Founder, Epic Author Publishing

HERE’S HOW I KNOW THIS WORKS:

For over 20-years, I tried and failed to get a book done. I felt like an idiot. Each year, I’d add the goal to my new year’s resolutions, and every year, I’d fail to hit it. I wasted thousands of hours lying to myself that I was making progress, only to face the facts later on that I was spinning my wheels. But I was simply going about it, the WRONG way.

I thought a book would be easy.

I thought, “It’s just words on a page. How hard could it be?” That was my first mistake. I thought I could, and should, do it on my own. The truth is, every successful author you know, didn’t do it alone. This is similar to the myth of the self-made millionaire. It doesn’t exist. Nobody that creates something “extraordinary” did it alone.

HERE’S PROOF: Look at the “acknowledgements” in any book, of any author whom you admire. What you’ll find are dozens, if not hundreds of people who helped make it happen.

THE TRUTH: Every successful author you know, had an “army of advocates” who helped them make their book amazing.

Once I understood this, I found the “right” mentor, and I got my book done. Better than that, I 10X’d my income in less than 12 months.

STOP! THINK ABOUT THAT FOR A SECOND

What would that mean to you, if you could add a ZERO to your income? It changed my world.

Below are my top five tried-and-true strategies (secrets) for monetizing your brand with your new book. Even better, you can start using these strategies “today,” BEFORE you write your book!

1. Use Pre-Promotion

Most people get this backward. The first step of becoming an author isn’t to write a book — it’s to tell everyone that you’re going to. Announcing what’s coming, building hype, and pre-selling are strategies used by millionaires and billionaires across industries.

A great example is Elon Musk. A few years ago, he was promoting his new car and talking about all the amazing features it would have, 2 years in the future! He didn’t say the car was done and ready for delivery. He simply announced that it was coming. He even openly admitted that they hadn’t yet built the factory that would build the batteries that would go in the car. And then, he pre-sold over 325,000 cars in a week.

HERE’S THE SECRET: Tell the world what’s coming. Get them excited. Build desire for what you’re about to create. By the time the book is ready, you’ll have people clamoring to work with you, buy your products/services, and of course — get your book!

2. Conduct Book Interviews

Once you’ve declared your new book is coming out, I advise my clients to put on their “author hat” and interview people about their new book. Who should you interview? Start interviewing the most successful people you can find. I suggest prospects, peers and promotional partners. PROSPECTS are your target audience for your new book and your products and services. PEERS are other amazing people in your space. PROMOTIONAL PARTNERS are leaders who already have the “attention” of your ideal avatar and audience.

Here’s the basic formula: Find a hungry audience, ask them what they want, give it to them.

Think of yourself like Sherlock Holmes and discover the “results” your avatar wants, and the “problems” they have. Dig deep to find out the “challenges” they’re facing, and most importantly learn the “language” they use to describe how it makes them feel. Remember, at this point you haven’t written your book. This is your opportunity to do “research” and test what you’re going to create – BEFORE you create it. Then, at the end of the interview, if you think you can help them, ask the 7-Magic-Words, “Would you like my help with that?”

When you’re talking to peers and promotional partners, choose the coolest people you can find. Think of established people who “already” have your audience’s attention and instead of competing with them, collaborate with them! Discover ways to build both of your businesses/brands together. This sets you up for the next strategy.

3. Build Your Book Launch Team

At this point, you’ve told the world that you’re writing a book and started connecting with top dogs in your industry. Capitalize on the attention and build momentum by asking the people you’ve interviewed to help you launch your book.

An easy way to do this is to start a Facebook group and invite people to join. This can give you an easy way to connect with your key supporters and keep them engaged. The “channel” of communication doesn’t matter. Whether you use Facebook, or LinkedIn or something else, your job is to assemble your “army of book advocates” who will help you promote and test your content, so when your book is released, it’s a fantastic hit.

4. Offer A Course, Coaching, or Consulting Program

If your book was a religious text, then the services you offer would be the church. Most authors think that the “information” in their book is enough to move people. While the best and most successful authors and influencers in the world, know the secret is “implementation.”

Consider what you can offer people to help them implement the strategies and ideas your book gives them. If you’ve already got these services, great. If not, here’s your opportunity to make new offers to better serve your clients and help them get results. You don’t have to have the program ready immediately. Just like with the book, don’t be afraid to presell and pre-promote your new program. Here’s a foundational question you can use to craft a new offer for your audience: “How can I best serve my client, and increase my freedom?” Consider what the next best steps are they should take and how you can help them create fast results.

5. Build Your Book Funnel.

A funnel is a predetermined set of steps you lead a visitor through towards a desired result. Consider an example of the Amazon purchase funnel. A visitor on Amazon has a few simple steps to go through before they can purchase a product. A book funnel is a website where you point people to learn more about your book. It’s also a way you can introduce them to the products/services you offer to help them implement the promises made in your book.

At the beginning, this can be a very simple page saying, “My book is coming soon! Enter your email for updates.” You can also create a more complex funnel that gives people access to content, webinars, checklists, etc. so you cultivate goodwill and add new clients to your business.

HERE’S WHAT MAKES THIS AWESOME

Let’s face it, writing a book isn’t the most obvious way to “monetize” your brand, and that’s what makes this strategy so great… Nobody else is doing it!

I call this Epic Ninja Marketing.

It’s EPIC, because it creates so much phenomenal goodwill, and attention for you and your brand. And it’s NINJA, because nobody sees it as marketing, but it’s a great way to get attention and attract and convert your perfect customer.

WARNING:

Do the things above in the wrong sequence, and fail to put in the work on the front end… and your new book (I don’t care how amazing it is) will sit there on your shelf – useless.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying your book won’t be awesome. But the truth is, most authors don’t know how to “use” their books once they’ve got them in their hands.

LAST THING

I know you’re a badass. You probably have a dozen or more books inside of you. I also believe that you have a duty and responsibility to share your gifts with the world. There are people in the world who are out there “suffering”… and you can help them.

So … Dare to be great

Your message is my mission.
